World Saxophone Quartet - The World Saxophone Quartet is a jazz group founded in 1977. The original members were Julius Hemphill (alto and soprano saxophone, flute), Oliver Lake (alto and soprano saxophone), Hamiet Bluiett (baritone saxophone, alto clarinet), and David Murray (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet). Alto saxophone - The alto saxophone is a variety of the saxophone, a family of woodwind instruments invented by Adolphe Sax. The alto is the third smallest of the saxophone family, which consists of over eight sizes of saxophone (see saxophone). Contrabass saxophone - The contrabass saxophone is the second largest member of the saxophone family (the largest being the triple B-flat subcontrabass tubax, although the tubax is not technically a member of the saxophone family due to its narrower bore). It is extremely large (twice the length of tubing of the baritone saxophone, with a bore twice as wide) and heavy, and is pitched in the key of double E-flat, one octave below the baritone. Baritone saxophone - The baritone saxophone, one of the larger members of the saxophone family, was invented by Adolphe Sax. The baritone is distinguished from smaller sizes of saxophone by the extra loop near its mouthpiece; this helps to keep the instrument at a practical height (the rare bass saxophone has a similar, but larger loop).

The saxophone probably comes closest to the otherwise ubiquitous Boehm system. The idea is that one should be able to start at the bottom of the original Baroque fingering system, as opposed to the ideal, having fewer irregular fingerings than the clarinet; and a true octave key, which neither the clarinet nor the flute possesses. saxophone fingering (C) saxophone fingering Inc. 2005.
